Boinnet says foiled terror attack targeted Judiciary

Kinyuru Munuhe @kinyurumunuhe

Police foiled a major terror attack targeting the Judiciary and government buildings last month, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said yesterday. He said the terror plot was planned by al Shabaab militants in Somalia with local facilitators in Nairobi, Isiolo and Rongai.

But Boinnet said the attack was pre-empted after police intercepted a Nairobi-bound vehicle loaded with explosives at Merti, Isiolo. One suspect was killed and two others arrested in the operation.

He said they believe the terrorists wanted to rescue detained terror suspects during a court sessions in a bid to embarrass the government. “Security agencies have been able to pre-empt many terrorist attacks in the last three years.

A month ago, Isiolo security committee thwarted a terror plot in Merti that targeted Judiciary and government buildings in Nairobi,” said the police boss. Speaking at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters in Nairobi, Boinnet said two more suspects, profiled as facilitators, linked to the terror plot have been arrested.

He was accompanied by DCI boss George Kinoti. Explosives recovered from the vehicle in Isiolo had the capacity to bring down buildings within a 250 metre radius. “Terrorism is a major threat to global security. For the last three years, joint efforts between the police and other security agencies have disrupted numerous potentially devastating terror plots targeting Kenya,” said Boinnet.

The police boss was also categorical that the two Iranians nationals initially sentenced to life imprisonment for terror-related charges but later appealed and jailed for 15 years were still in police custody. “Who said they are not in the country? They are in custody,” he told journalists.

Timothy Simwa @timsimwa

Former national hockey boys champions St Anthony Boys Kitale started their regional campaign on a high after thrashing Nakuru county’s Utumishi 4-0 in their first match of Pool B as the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association Rift Valley Region kicked off at St Joseph’s Boys’ Kitale yesterday.

Under the tutelage of coach Kevin Kegan the saints proved a bigger force for the rookies to handle as they dominated the show throughout with Brian Ongeche grabbing a brace for the winners in both halves while Nicholas Muchiti and Oscar Kibet scored one each. In Group D, debutants Eldoret Township announced their arrival in style after overpowering Baringo County-based Kabimoi 2-0 with brilliant goals from William Kidare and Muchai Gitau.

In girls’ hockey, EMC Singore from Uasin Gishu stunned Kajiado’s Elerai 2-0 in their first match to secure their chances of qualifying to the next round in Pool B. Ursula Cherotich and Celestine Kurgat goals ensured Singore goes into the second match confident while Elerai faces a must-win encounter to revive their chances of qualifying to quarters.

Nandi County Tach Asis narrowly secured their first win after edging out Baringo’s Kituro 1-0 in a hotly-contested match in pool A thanks to Lydia Moraa’s solitary goal. In handball boys, Elgeyo Marakwet County Kitanyi smashed their West Pokot county neigbours Chewoyet 19-9 in a rather one sided showdown played at the St Anthony Boys Grounds.

Kisanana from Baringo cushioned Londiani from Kericho county 19-17 in another show down in Pool B. In other results St Francis from Nandi whitewashed Kibingei from Baringo 26-9 in girls’ handball.

Meanwhile St Michael Kipsombe from Uasin Gishu County has booked a berth at the rugby 15s quarter-finals despite registering mixed fortunes at the preliminaries in Group B yesterday. Menengai have also advanced as group leaders as they try to make their mark in the 15s category after defying odds last year t emerge national rugby sevens champions.

Kipsombe who are making their maiden appearance at the regionals outwitted Nanyuki 19-0 in their first match before stumbling in their ultimate test against Nakuru’s Menengai in which they lost 20-10.

The regional games enlisting schools from the 14 counties across the larger Rift Valley region will run until Saturday when the curtains are expected to come down with finals where the winners will advance to the national championships later in April to represent the region in hockey, rugby15s, handball and athletics.

Ben Yedder double condemns Mourinho’s lifeless side

Manchester, Wednesday @Peoplesports11

By the time the last Manchester United player left the pitch, the stadium was already close to being empty. Only one pocket of noise and jubilation remained, Sevilla’s support, bouncing and boisterous, singing in Spanish to the same melody that accompanies ‘Will Grigg’s on fire’. Wissam Ben Yedder’s on fire doesn’t scan, but he was and as a result Manchester United are out of Europe.

An excellent performance by the away team, full of the ambition United failed to show over two matches, was only half the tale, though. It is well known that a 0-0 first leg is a dangerous score, but it is not as dangerous as United made it look on Tuesday night with a performance lacking in all the qualities that once made them such a force in this competition, a club that won it, twice, under Sir Alex Ferguson and often went deep. United haven’t travelled beyond this stage since 2014 and didn’t really look like doing it on Tuesday night, either.

If Sevilla could have found their range earlier, this tie would not have taken so long to conclude. As it was, the addition of Ben Yedder, a striker rejected by West Ham for being too small, apparently, changed the game.

He has been Sevilla’s top scorer in Europe this season, but has not started either game against United. Once introduced in the 72nd minute, however, he gave Sevilla a momentum and impetus United did not demonstrate in three hours of knockout football.

Sevilla got what they deserved; United, too. The numbers show the perils of 0-0 for the team at home in the second leg; in 70 per cent of Champions League matches the club in Manchester United’s position has gone out.

Jose Mourinho picked a midfield in Marouane Fellaini and Nemanja Matic that lacked creation and those farther forward, Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard, could not get into the game. It was crying out for Juan Mata but by the time he was introduced the tie was as good as over. He made a goal for Romelu Lukaku but by then there were seven minutes remaining and United needed two more. -DAILYMAIL

IMF extends Kenya’s Sh152b standby loan

Martin Mwita @PeopleDailyKe

Kenya’s economy has received a major boost after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreed to extend the expiring $1.5 billion (Sh151.8 billion) standby credit facility, providing the much needed cushion on the shilling against foreign currencies.

This follows a request by the government, through the National Treasury, for an extension of the facility to enable completion of the required reviews under the lender-supported programme.

IMF announced on Tuesday it had approved a six-month extension of the facility which include a $989.8 million (Sh100.3 billion) and $494.9 million (Sh50.1 billion) 24-month Standby Credit Facility (SCF) for Kenya, which was due to expire at the end of this month.

The two were approved in March 2016 for a combined Special Drawing Right (SDR) for Kenya. SDR is an international reserve asset, created by IMF in 1969 to supplement its member countries’ official reserves. As of September last year, 204.2 billion SDRs (about $291 billion) had been created and allocated to members.

“On March 12, the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund approved Kenyan authorities’ request for a six-month extension of the country’s Stand-By Arrangement (SBA) to allow additional time to complete the outstanding reviews,” IMF said in a statement.

The Fund had withdrawn Kenya’s access to the facility in June, after the government failed to meet budget-deficit targets, with rising expenditure pegged on the drought that hit the country last year and the prolonged general elections. IMF has demanded a number of reforms including a reduced budget deficit and repeal of the rate cap law which came into place in September 2016.

National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich has since promised to implement reforms demanded by the Bretton Woods institution, saying his office will “reduce by half the government’s budget deficit by June 2021”, and review the 17-month-old cap.

“The reviews are expected to be completed by September 2018. Completion of the reviews will enable the Kenyan authorities to have access to funds available under the precautionary SBA,” IMF said. The latest development is a major relief for the shilling which had been left exposed to vulnerability from foreign exchange markets, mainly the US dollar which has a direct impact on the country’s import bill.

Though Kenya was yet to draw down on the two-year IMF facility, its availability is enough to calm possible market turbulence. Possible external shocks that can hit the country hard include sudden rise in global oil prices and strengthening of the greenback.

Reports of the facility’s withdrawal came out last month when the shilling was trading at an average 101.33 against the dollar, slightly weakening the shilling to 101.66 in late February to March 1. The local currency was depending on the foreign reserves for buffers which stood at $7.15 billion (Sh724.3 billion) as of March 1, latest Central Bank of Kenya data shows.

They blinded my baby, mother accuses hospital

A family in Meru is pointing an accusing finger at the Meru Level Five hospital for partial blindness of their toddler after a caesarean section one-and-half years ago. Baby Favour Gatwiri was born at the health institution on November 27, 2016 but developed complications shortly after.

Accusing the hospital of negligence, the mother Sabera Kagwiria says she pointed out a reddish colouration on the baby’s left cheek and eye immediately they left the theatre but was told it was nothing to worry about.

“The infant cried non-stop because the spot was growing itchy with time so we sought the doctor’s advise but he assured me the baby was fine,” she says. However, the eye started oozing pus the following day and the doctor advised the mother of five to see an eye specialist after she is discharged.

But then, she too, developed complications when her stomach started swelling with painful contractions. She ignored her plight and focused on the baby’s situation as she tried in vain to see the eye specialist at the casualty of the same hospital when she was discharged.

Two days later, the baby’s left cheek started developing abscess wounds even as her own stomach continued to swell and pain terribly. Four days later, she fell unconscious and was rushed to a nearby Mission Hospital where she was admitted for two weeks and had to undergo another surgery to clear pus from her stomach.

“The doctor there told me it was a result of improper stitching during the caesarean operation,” she says. The family, which languishes in poverty, claims they have been moving from hospital to hospital seeking help for their ailing daughter but in vain and spending more than Sh200,000 donated by friends and well wishers in the process.

They claim the baby was treated for a skin disease for the many clinics the attended at Meru Level-Five Hospital with the toddler finally going blind at nine months. However, hospital CEO James Kirimi disputed the claims saying the file of the patient shows the mother suffered fetal distress while the baby was born with hamangioma.

These are non-cancerous tumours common in newborns and usually subside without treatment. The baby has now been referred to Kikuyu Mission Hospital in Kiambu to undergo a major facial left eye rectification on the 23rd of this month.

The family is pleading with well wishers for assistance to raise the Sh120,000 needed adding that the doctors at the facility say the infection is spreading towards the brain which my result to brain damage if not rectified urgently.

Barca star scores twice, sets up Dembele as Catalan giants’

Barcelona, Thursday @PeopleSports11

This stuff doesn’t happen by accident, you know. The first time Lionel Messi stuck the ball through Thibaut Courtois’s legs from a seemingly impossible angle it was possible to fool yourself that, well, he might have got a little fortunate there. The second time, there could be no doubt.

Messi shoots from places that no other footballer would, he is capable of targeting areas of the goal, or of a person, with a precision that is quite breathtaking. It is remarkable that Barcelona ever lose a game with a player of his talent on tap, remarkable that he doesn’t just score several this way each time he plays, considering he seems able to pass through the thigh gap at will.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, his Champions League ambitions laid to waste, walked off having given Messi an affectionate cuddle. That might not have gone down well with those who demand pure tribalism but, as a football man, we understand. Sometimes you just have to say well done.

Alan Shearer thinks we are witnesses to the greatest footballer there has ever been, on nights like this he makes a very appealing case. Chelsea weren’t bad here, whatever the scoreline might suggest.

They were better than Manchester United against Sevilla on Tuesday and certainly not embarrassed. They just made mistakes. And every time they did, Barcelona scored. Every time, without fail, across two legs.

Andreas Christensen, Courtois, Cesc Fabregas, Cesar Azpilicueta, every Barcelona goal had a different abetter from Chelsea’s ranks. The experienced ones, on Wednesday night, too. Veterans of World Cup finals and huge European games.

They each committed the cardinal sin. If you can’t give a sucker an even break, you certainly can’t give three to a team like Barcelona. They are brutal in making it count, clinical in the finish in a way Chelsea were not.

And in Messi they have a player who scores goals from angles the Greek giants of trigonometry didn’t know had been contemplated. There is no sliver of the penalty area from which the goal can be made safe.

That is the only mitigation in Courtois’s defence. What was said before this tie? That Chelsea are Messi’s bogey team and he doesn’t score against them. Seems to have put that one to bed, don’t you think? Barcelona scored four over the two legs, Messi got three and made the other. -DAILYMAIL

Moi discharged from hospital, says Njiru

Noah Cheploen @cheploennoah

Retired President Daniel arap Moi was yesterday discharged from Ichalov Hospital in Tel Aviv, Israel where he has been receiving treatment for the last four days. A statement by his communications handler Lee Njiru said the former Head of State underwent a series fruitful of medical check-ups at the hospital.

“The former president who is in a jovial mood and in good spirits will spend the day visiting some Holy sites in Isreal and the city of Jerusalem,” the statement said. Moi, 93, was flown to Israel on Sunday for specialised treatment for what his aides described as troubling knee. He is accompanied by son Gideon, who is also the Senator for Baringo and his personal doctor Dr David Silverstein among others.

The ageing former Head of State has taken a low profile in the last few years and was last seen in public on October 26 after he cast his vote in the repeat presidential election.

On Wednesday, Njiru said Moi was in high spirits and would be back home soon. At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had to issue a report discounting reports on social media over the well-being of the former president.
