Mama, your sons and daughters are wasting away!

MICHAEL MURAYA @michael_muraya

Dear mothers of campo sons and daughters. I know I will be called a snitch and other names for doing this, but I have to do it anyway.

Mama, remember when you used the hallowed slipper, leather belt, the dreaded mwiko and the feared shouting voice that was packed with threats? Remember how well-mannered these babies were? Well, your years of hard work are now going to waste.

During that time, if a child dared stay out until darkness, they would learn a lesson they would never forget. They understood why slippers weren’t just footwear. But they seem to have forgotten all that Ma.

Mama, your daughters are walking in the streets at 2am as high as a kite and dressed in miniature clothes. Mama, your sons and daughters are not just staying out late, but spending nights in bars drinking your money and posing for sinful photos to post online. Mama, please send a signal.

Remember when you would whip that kid silly for walking out in the cold without warm clothing? Mama, those years of instilling discipline are gradually going to waste. In this July weather, your daughters are hitting the foggy streets in dresses so short you’d think the tailor ran out of material.

In these freezing temperatures mama, your daughters are ‘slaying’ in clothes that show more skin than the actual material. A look at them mama and you even start feeling cold on their behalf. What should we do mama?

Remember how you used to sit and warn them not be like the drunkard neighbour? Those words of wisdom evaporated from their heads Ma. Nowadays, your drunkard neighbour would warm himself not to be like them. Imagine!

Remember how you used to wake them up in the morning for Sunday school? Remember how you’d deal with anyone who refused to wake up early for church? Mama, some of them have not seen a church door since they joined campus. Nowadays, Sunday mornings are for nursing hangovers. They have become time to hail cabs to return home after waking up in wrong beds.

Sunday mornings have become drinking time for those who love to ‘unlock’ after a night of drinking spree. It’s no longer the time to fellowship in church mama. Send a signal!

Kinyuru Munuhe @kinyurumunuhe

Twenty foreigners were arrested at the weekend while trying to illegally enter the country. They were seized in three separate incidents in Moyale, Isiolo and Marsabit.

Nine aliens from Ethiopia were intercepted in Moyale, seven Congolese in Isiolo and four Eritreans in Marsabit. The police said the Congolese had escaped from a refugee camp in Uganda.

“The Eritreans were arrested at Turbi trading centre in Marsabit North,” a report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations says.

They are believed to be victims of human trafficking.  The Nairobi-Moyale highway  is considered a human-trafficking  route for migrants from Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia.

In May, detectives from the Special Crimes Prevention Unit rescued 22 Eritreans suspected to have been victims of human trafficking syndicate during a night operation on Thika Highway.

Lewis Njoka @LewisNjoka

Kerosene and diesel users got some reprieve yesterday after Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra), announced new retail pump prices for the period ending August 14.

However, super petrol users were not so lucky as pump prices were raised, yet again. Diesel prices in Nairobi decreased by Sh0.88, kerosene by Sh2.31 while that of super petrol increased by Sh0.29 per litre from the current selling price of Sh115.10.

Following the price changes, diesel in Nairobi will from today retail at Sh103.88, Kerosene at Sh101.97 while super petrol will go for Sh115.39.

Those in Mombasa will purchase super petrol at Sh112.74, while diesel will retail at Sh101.25 and kerosene at Sh 99.35 Nakuru motorists will get their super petrol at Sh115.86, diesel at Sh104.58 and kerosene at Sh102.69. These prices are applicable between July 15 and August 14.

“The changes in this month’s prices have been a consequence of the average landed cost of imported super petrol decreasing by 1.83 per cent from $538.08 per cubic metre in May 2019 to $528.26 per cubic metre in June 2019,” EPRA said in a statement.

Landed cost

It said the landed cost of diesel decreased by 3.07 per cent from $535.84 per cubic metre to $ 519.39 per cubic metre and kerosene decreasing by 5.49 per cent from $532.89 per cubic metre to $503.63 per cubic metre.

This translates to a decrease of 1.83 per cent for the landed cost of super petrol, 3.07 per cent decrease for diesel and 5.49 decrease for kerosene.

Free On Board (FOB) price of Murban crude oil lifted in June 2019 decreased by 10.44 per cent from $72.35 per barrel in May to $64.80 per barrel.

Over the May to June period, the average monthly US dollar to Kenya shilling exchange rate depreciated by 0.68 per cent from Sh101.20 per US dollar in May to 101.89 per US dollar in June.

Missionary in Bomet child sex claims arrested in US

@PeopleDailyKe

The US government has arrested Gregory Dow, 60, who is accused of sexually abusing minors at a children’s home he was running in Bomet county.

A statement from US attorney McSwain said Dow, who claimed to be a Christian missionary, was arrested on Friday and charged with four counts of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place.

Dow fled Kenya for the US in 2017 after police launched a manhunt for him while investigating the allegations. His wife MaryRose was arrested and charged in a Sotik court with helping implant birth control devices on four teenagers. However,  she escaped after being released on bond.

Dow (pictured, left) is accused of abuse from 2013 to 2017, when he was running the  Dow Family Children’s Home. He will remain in custody until a detention hearing next week, a judge in Philadelphia ordered on Friday.

Meanwhile, police in Mombasa have launched a manhunt for two Americans, accused of luring 11 girls to act in pornographic films.

Kenya’s early Afcon exit not surprising

$

Harambee Stars’ early exit from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations  (Afcon) in Egypt was not surprising. Indeed, it is shocking to hear some Kenyans mourning the exit. But what exactly did we expect? Did Stars deserve to be in Egypt in the first place?

A farmer reaps what he sows. It is no different in football. If we invest in mediocrity, we should not expect excellent performance.

Kenyans have for far too long tolerated mediocrity in various sectors, including politics, business, education health and transport. This is why some Kenyans expected a miracle—Harambee Stars to win the Afcon title even when it was clear we just scrapped through to Egypt.

Truth is, Kenya was not supposed to have taken part in this year’s Afcon. Stars made it there by fluke. They had to rely on the equation of probabilities to qualify for the continental football tournament. During the qualifiers, Kenya was beaten by Sierra Leone in Freetown during the first leg. Stars were trailing the group. However, the international soccer governing body, Fifa, banned Sierra Leone from all competitions owing to wrangles within the West African country’s own soccer management organisation.

Thus, Kenya was awarded the three points of what should have been the second leg in Nairobi without kicking a ball. By dint of that, Stars sneaked into Afcon. After playing all the three matches in Group C, Kenya was again relying on probabilities to move to the knock-out stages. It did not work.

Probably aware of the team’s shortcomings, President Uhuru Kenyatta was spot on when, as he flagged off the national team to Egypt, told the lads to “have fun” and experience of continental contests. Which is what our boys did. They presumably had fun.

We have to temper patriotism with success. It despicable when we continue to swallow bitter pills on an annual calendar in the name of patriotism. Apart from goalkeeper Patrick Matasi’s heroics on their last match of the tournament, in which they were thrashed 3-0 by Algeria, there is little  to write home about Harambee Stars presence in Afcon.

A dysfunctional team that had issues with selection, Stars display tactless football devoid of flair and class. What’s worse, the coach  inexplicably left out some of the best players, such as the now retired Allan Wanga, and  yet expected to shine at Afcon. That is stretching our luck.

Madagascar and Benin, who were making their Afcon debut, demonstrated to the world the difference between commitment and mediocrity. The two tiny nations gallantly fought their way to the quarter-finals, where they were, however, knocked out. Kenya, appearing in the competition for the fourth time returned home with a lot of excuses, as usual.

The problems run deep in Kenyan football. For instance, save for Gor Mahia, no team in the local league can attract a sizeable crowd of fans to the stadium for local matches.

Perhaps Kenyans, led by Sports Cabinet secretary Amina Mohamed  ought to go back to the drawing board and retrace our steps. Some time back, Cecafa secretary-general Nicholas Musonye, bemoaned the tendency by Kenyans to fill social joints to watch English Premier League  (EPL) teams play instead of filling stadiums to support local teams. He was right then and still is.

What I know for sure is that I am one of the millions of Kenyans eagerly waiting for EPL to enjoy some exciting football lacking in local league.  – The author is a Revise Editor at the People Daily—mukalo.kwayeram@mediamax.co.ke

Maraga pledges to deploy judges to address Vihiga case backlog

Chief Justice David Maraga has assured Vihiga residents that the Judiciary will bring High Court services closer  to them by sending  judges to Vihiga Law Courts.

Maraga, while addressing residents when he officially  opened a new court building at Vihiga Law Courts on Friday, said most of the cases from the county are filed in Kisumu or Kakamega making it expensive and time-wasting to those seeking High Court services.

Maraga said the Judiciary plans to send High Court judges to Vihiga to handle such cases. Maraga also asked judges and magistrate to move with speed and settle pending backlogs of cases which have piled in the courts for more than five years, before the year ends.

“I urge judges and magistrates in court to move with speed and settle backlog of cases which have overstayed in the courts before the year ends,”  he said.

Betting directors under scrutiny

The government is mulling deporting some of the directors of the betting firms. Sources at the Ministry of Interior confided to People Daily that the government is profiling some of the foreigners involved in betting before taking action.

“Some of them came into the country as tourists, while others came with visas not related to doing business, but they have changed and are now engaged in betting,” said a source at the ministry.

The revelation comes a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta vowed not to  backtrack  on the reforms his government is undertaking in the gambling industry.

Uhuru on Saturday noted that the taxes betting firms are required to pay are for development and the betterment of the country’s economy.

The Head of State said he would not rescind the government’s decision to shut down the paybills and short codes for 27 of these firms until their licences are renewed.

He further noted that court processes are being used to frustrate the taxman and other regulatory agencies.

“The firms should stop threats that they will move to court. The government must get its share to fund activities that are beneficial to this country,” he said. And yesterday, one of the biggest betting firms, SportPesa put up an advertisement indicating that it was negotiating with the Kenya Revenue Authority to sort out the issue.

SportPesa chief executive Ronald Karauri (pictured) said they have embarked on talks with stakeholders with the aim of developing a mutually beneficial solution that would complement the government’s development agenda.

KICD digests findings from a Community Service Learning project in 65 schools as it developes the CBC curriculum for secondary level

George Kebaso and Irene Mwambura @PeopleDailyKe

The first round of a research project to help  the government determine how to expand the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) to secondary learners has posted impressive results.

The 18-month Community Service Learning Programme conducted in 65 secondary schools in 10 counties saw students from some institutions develop money-making projects.

Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) Chief Executive Officer, Julius Jwan says they conducted the survey jointly with the Ministry of Education and Educate!, a non-govermental organisation.  It aims at understanding how best to develop the new learning area for the CBC curriculum at secondary level.

“The Community Service Learning we have been testing applies concepts students have learnt in the classroom to real-life situations and enhances entrepreneurship, social awareness and responsibility,” said Jwan.

In Kakamega county, the Kwirenyi Secondary School wanted to improve community health, so the school taught community members how to treat water and keep it safe for drinking, whilst also running a sensitisation campaigns on preventing malaria and cholera.

Biogas fuel

The project has also taught learners how to connect the knowledge they are gaining from other learning areas to their entrepreneurial ventures. In Homa Bay county, preliminary results from the survey showed that students from Agoro Sare school applied what they learned in chemistry and biology to create a biogas business, using kitchen waste and cow dung from the school herd to create biogas fuel.

“The business intends to provide the school with a source of low-cost and sustainable fuel,” Jwan said.

Likewise, students from Mbitini Girls Secondary School in Kitui county started a rabbit project after learning about diabetes in class. The business aims to sell and promote the consumption of white meat in the community.

The programme follows global research into community service learning that has shown it delivers a rapid and significant change in students’ attitudes and skills.

According to a study of 1,500 US students published in the Michigan Journal of Community Learning, the learning area changes students’ personal values within just six months. This significantly raises the chances of students entering careers that help others, and raising their levels of volunteering and community leadership.

It has also been shown to increase students’ belief in their ability to solve community problems and their sense of connection with the community.

“We have run the Kenyan programme under the theme of ‘Igniting the High School Social Entrepreneur’ to equip students to create livelihoods while also solving local problems,” said Diana Mwai, Educate!’s Kenya Programme Director.

Educate! which seeks to impact one million students across Africa, has advised on curriculum reforms and run similar programmes  in Rwanda and Uganda. These were found to nearly double the learning power of participants, increase the use of student-centred teaching methods, and deliver a greater focus on community issues.

Educate! is a non-governmental organisation that tackles youth unemployment by partnering with schools and governments to reform what schools teach and how they teach it, so that students in Africa have the skills to start businesses, get jobs and drive development in their communities.

The programme has already transformed the lives of Kenyan learners involved too, both through community engagement and through the entrepreneurial skills gained. A key goal of the programme is to produce research to be used by curriculum developers.

Stakeholders forum

Professor of Teacher Education at Moi University, Dr Charles Ong’ondo, has led the 18-month, qualitative research project, in collaboration with the KICD and the Education ministry.

The research team conducted three rounds of research, beginning with a needs assessment before the programme began. The research team is now in the process of collecting final data, which will lead to a summative research report.

The research will be shared with national stakeholders at KICD’s curriculum conference in August and will inform how to best design this new learning area, as KICD prepares for the development of a new secondary curriculum. “We aim to deliver powerful skill sets that prepare students for individual success and to tackle youth unemployment,” said Diana.

Participating schools for assessment by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) have exhibited the results of the Community Service Learning programme in Taita Taveta, Kitui, Garissa, Homa Bay and Kisii counties.

This comes as Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof George Magoha urges a taskforce appointed to drive transition to CBC to consider sharing early findings of their research with KICD and the Ministry of Education before presenting a summative report during the August stakeholders’s forum.
